Working in Norway

When you work in Norway, you automatically become a member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme from your first day of work. You will not become a member though, if you are working temporarily for your foreign employer in Norway.

Through the membership you are entitled a.o. to health services in Norway and can earn pension rights according to the regulations of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme.

In order to be exempted from membership, you must provide documentation that you have similar coverage elsewhere. Different rules apply for persons working in Norway depending on whether you come from an EEA-country, from a country Norway has a social security agreement with, or a country outside the EEA that has no social security agreement with Norway.

Coming from an EEA-country

When you come from an EEA-country to work here, you become a compulsory member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme from the first day unless you have been posted from your home country as an employee. If you have been posted as an employee from another EEA-country, you must present form E101 as documentation. When posted here, you are not entitled to benefits from NAV, but you are entitled to health services for your home country's account.

From countries with social security agreements outside EEA

You will become a compulsory member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme from your first day of work unless you have been posted as an employee from your home country.

If you have been posted as an employee, you must provide documentation on a separate form depending on which country you come from. When you are posted as an employee, you are exempted from membership of the pension section. You will become a compulsory member of the health section with entitlement to have health services covered by the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme.

From countries with no social security agreement

All persons working in Norway are compulsory members of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme from their first day of work. Through the membership you are entitled a.o. to health services in Norway and can earn pension rights according to the regulations of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme.
